The Maldives has introduced its first formal trademark law, the Trademark Act (Law No. 19/2025), replacing the earlier reliance on cautionary notices. Once the Act comes into force on 11 November 2026, trademark protection will only be available through official registration with the Maldives Intellectual Property Office (MIPO).

A 12-month transitional period (11 Nov 2026–11 Nov 2027) requires all brands previously protected through use or caution notices to be re-filed under the new system to maintain their rights. Caution notices may still be used temporarily, but will no longer offer protection once the registration system becomes active.
