India sees a rise in patent, trademark applications: DIPP September 18, 2008: Business Standard
If the total number of IPR applications filed in the country is an indication, then India is creating a conducive environment for innovations. According to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), the filing of patent applications has increased from 4824 in the year 1999-2000 to 28,882 applications in the year 2006-2007. As against 8,010 trademark (TM) registrations in 1999-2000, 109,361 TMs were registered in 2006-07. Also, the filing of applications for design has increased from 2874 in 1999-2000 to 5372 in 2006-07. more>>> ________________________________________________

Toothbrush battle lands in HC September 18, 2008: Times of India
It is something we pick up after waking up in the morning and again before turning in for the night. But few bother to look at one closely — no matter what the ads say. The humble, yet essential, toothbrush is at the centre of a legal battle being fought in Calcutta High Court. It all started with Colgate Palmolive registering three toothbrush designs with the patent office here and rivals Anchor Health and Beautycare filing petitions seeking cancellation of these designs. Anchor claimed the designs could not be registered afresh as similar products had already been patented both in India and abroad. more>>> ________________________________________________

Delhi co in a soup over Wipro logo imitation in bulbs September 18, 2008: Economic Times
Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting (WCCL) has won a court order preventing a Delhi-based company from producing bulbs with a lookalike logo of Wipro Safelite, the second legal victory this year for Wipro in a case involving trademark infringement of its bulb brand. The Delhi High Court has also appointed its official to seize the stocks of SK Lamps, WCCL said in a statement. Another Delhi manufacturer, KK Lamps, was ordered in May by the same court to close operations after a complaint by WCCL. more>>> ________________________________________________

Bollywood titles must be registered with Copyright Board: expert September 18, 2008: Indiaenews
Hindi film titles are always registered with film trade associations, but an advocate here who specialises in Bollywood cases says that registering with the Copyright Board is essential if filmmakers want to protect their intellectual property rights adequately. The Bollywood filmmakers register the titles with the Title Registration Committee of the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) or the Film and Television Producers' Guild of India or the Association of Motion Pictures and Television Programme Producers (AMPTPP). more>>> ________________________________________________
Delhi HC rejects Warner's plea; clears release of Hari Puttar September 22, 2008: Times of India
The Delhi High Court on Monday rejected a plea of Hollywood production giant Warner Bros seeking stay on the release of Bollywood film Hari Puttar: A Comedy of Terrors. Warner Bros, the owner of Harry Potter trademark, sought the court's intervention to restrain the producer of the film from releasing it with its present title. Justice Reva Khetrapal found that there is no "commonality" between the names and allowed the producer of the Bollywood film to release it on scheduled on Friday. more>>> ________________________________________________
